Introducing....Beluga Baby! (And, how to create your own brand)

Hello my beauties,

One of the steps on any journey starting a new business is branding. If you’re a new parent and are following this blog to find out how to start your OWN business while raising your new little one, here’s how I did it for Beluga Baby Bamboo Wraps.

Step 1: Find inspiration

Go online, on Pinterest, and in magazines to find imagery that inspires you. This can be artwork, other branding, packaging, or anything that you think represents the brand you are trying to create. Put these all in one place for a couple of weeks, then come back to it. Sort through and pick 5 or 8 images that best represent that brand you are trying to create.

Step 2: Write it down

Try to pin down the words that best describe your brand. You can take direction from your image inspiration for this step. Even if you only end up with two or three words that dictate your brand, that’s all you need. Words like corporate, sweet, delicate, urban, whimsical or vintage.

Step 3: Design it (or find a designer)

Look through the portfolios of designers you are considering using. They need to show that the designer can attain different aesthetics in their work. This shows that they’re able to take direction and can create in a variety of different styles. Show the designer your inspiration and your brand identity words. They should ask you several questions to determine what kind of colours you like, and what type of logo you’re looking for (typography vs icon based).

Step 4: Assess

The designer should send you back 3 or 4 different iterations of logos and colours in different styles. From there, you generally pick one and tweak it until it’s perfect. Then, roll that one logo out across several different styles and colours so it can be used in different scenarios.

My Tips:

  • Consider your target market – who will be purchasing your product? What do they like? What are some other brands your target market likes and purchases from?
  • Be yourself – what feels true to you? If it doesn’t resonate with you as the business owner you won’t come across as authentic. Being real is so important to gaining the trust of your target audience.
  • Don’t be a copycat – imitation is the truest form of flattery, sure. But even if you are inspired by another company’s design, I would refer you back to my tip number two. Make sure you put your own unique spin on everything you do.
  • Get opinions of others you trust – but in the end, trust yourself.

And without further ado, here is the Beluga Baby branding :).
